Man’s heart is known to be the deepest abyss that can possibly exist. The intricacies contained in the way of life that man chooses reminds him daily that, in order to find himself deep within, coming out is equally necessary. It is with this regard that man chooses to go out, not to collaborate as an end in itself but to advance his endeavor. It is at this conundrum that he meets the Other with the same intent as his. There arises conflict of interests which are fanned into a raging flame by other minor but unavoidable desires. Man seeks love, power and wealth. These three makes man to lose any moral code that he might be having or living by (if there is any anyway) and he turns out to be worse than a brute (the word brute takes the connotation of the Brute, a friend of Julius Caesar, who collaborated in his assassination as it is presented by Shakespeare in his play, Julius Caesar.).
The world today is united by a common denominator. The human race is threatened with extinction by Corona Virus (Covid-19) pandemic, a virulent disease unknown to man. Its mode of spread, up to now remains a clever guess. As I write this article, the pandemic have claimed more than 10,000 lives and the number is expected to rise. This has brought with it various alteration. Man has been removed from his comfort zone. He no longer feels safe. There is nowhere to turn to and for the first time, man has realized that money can give you temporal false sense of power because, with failing health, there is nothing much that money cannot do for you. For once, there is no gap between the poor and the rich, the caste system is destroyed and even religions are no longer throwing darts of hatred and intolerance. For those who hoarded money and built safe havens for their families, they are being smoked out of their dens. I may sound like a person who takes pleasure in the suffering of others but what I want to put across is that, for once, man has realized there are no half-gods and half-men.
It is in this tormenting time in the history of man that fingers are pointed, with each faction trying to fight for what they believe in. Difference ideologies are felt at the crossroads where the interests of a group seems ‘to be suppressed’ by another group. Super powers are accusing others that covid-19 is a biological weapon, or similar to that, the pious are saying that the pandemic is a result of God’s wrath raining on humanity for their sinful nature, the sportspersons feel that they are not earning what they ought to be earning, the rogue spiritual men are no longer on ‘sanctuaries’ taking advantage of the brokenness of fellow man, others come up with queer stories; giving the whole situation a different twist and so on and so forth. What remains at the end of the day is that man, each person, is trying his or her level best to survive this pandemic. Yes each and every other person is trying to SURVIVE.
At the moment, many of us are faced with difficult moments. Man is faced with real anguish. There is fear and discouragement. There are lots of uncertain events that we are anticipating. Even the slightest cough or irritation is reminding man that at any given time, he can test positive and maybe not make it out of the ventilators. Man is vehemently calling unto God, maybe this time, more devotedly than before. For those who never believed and they remember the looming danger, they just try to make it right because, inasmuch as they would want to believe otherwise, they are aware of each event and which can be an occasion of death. I am pretty sure that there are those who may want to hold onto the ideological beliefs that they find solace in and those who are not fascinated with afterlife. They are those who believe in predestination and what it entails while there are those who believe that, through various actions and devotions, things can change.
No wonder Philip K. Dick saw all men as insects which are groping towards something terrible or divine. Man is faced with uncertainty about what will happen after he dies (not necessarily from this pandemic). If he would be certain where he is destined, then death would not be something to be feared. There are those who believe in afterlife and there are those like Bertrand Russell who believes that there is nothing beyond the grave. I would not dwell so much on whether there is or there is not because that is not of importance for now since, whether there is or there is not, there is nothing much I can do about it.
During this time, there will be a number of people that will fall into depression. There are those who hold so much into what they are told or believe and when things do not work out, they fall into despair. Take for instance the healers we have in this nation. Those who make ‘the lame to walk and deaf to see, those who promise paradise in such an alluring tone that coffers go home starving’, they are nowhere to be seen. The nature of this pandemic and the mystery it brings with it increases the degree of consciousness which brings about the desperation as Kierkegaard put it. Man is pushed to the edge of losing it.
Man thinks that life has become a punishment and it is no longer a gift. Imagine a scenario where a teenage boy wakes up in a village in Bergamo only to find military trucks loading up bodies of those who were once his kindred. That would be devastating to a point where he will be inconsolable. Not even a verse from any Holy Book whether it is a Bible, Quran or Vedas can soothe the pain and desperation he will be feeling. He will lose the essence of life. He will start questioning even the existence of not only himself, but also of the possibility of life. There would be no more reason to live. It is then that he would pose questions like: Do we live to die? Is there anything beyond the grave? What if there is not? Does this life have a meaning? Why should we live? Why should we live?
